Super Adept Lathe [SA_1]
This is a 'Super Adept" lathe manufactured by F.W. Portass at their "Abbeydale Works" in Sheffield. The lathe first appeared in 1933 and remained in production for almost 3 decades including a break for the war years. Primarily aimed at modellers and model engineers, these lathes were for many an entry into the world of turning and indeed continue to find similar enthusiasm. At around 13" in length and with a swing of 1 5/8" (3 ¼" diameter) these lathes are very compact which makes them ideal for use where space is limited.
This particular example is in generally good condition although it has had a repair to the end of the bed at some time. The headstock is fitted with the very desirable manufacturer's optional 4-jaw independent chuck. Unfortunately there is no tailstock. A suitable drive belt is fitted and a couple of turning tools included. A rule is shown in one of the pictures for scaling purposes only.
